Windows could not start the cluster service on Local Computer. Service-specific error code 2

I had this annoying error while trying to get the cluster service going on a 2012 R2 host that had its cluster ungracefully blown away. Turned out doing so leaves the remnants of the cluster in AD and elsewhere. This host also had the McAfee AV managed agent installed on it.

I tried to remove the clustering role, rebooting, re-adding – all to no avail.

AV1

Looked like the AV agent was holding onto some cluster files. Now how to get rid of the managed AV agent. Attempting a uninstall from Control Panel throws the following error: McAfee agent cannot be removed while it is managed mode.

AV2

Open up an elevated command prompt, not elevated PoSh window!

Go to c:\Program Files (x86)\McAfee\Common Framework

and run FrmInst.exe /forceuninstall

This gets rid of the McAfee agent for good. Reboot host for good measure.
